Hair extensions are such an exciting way to add fullness, length, and a little extra magic to your look. But if you’re living with an autoimmune condition, there are a few extra things you’ll want to keep in mind before jumping into the world of extensions.

The truth is, autoimmune diseases can sometimes make your scalp, skin, or hair a little more sensitive than usual. Conditions like alopecia, lupus, psoriasis, and others can change the way your scalp reacts, how strong your natural hair is, or even how your body heals from tiny pressures and friction. And while we take every precaution in the salon to be as gentle and thoughtful as possible, sometimes the body responds in ways we just can’t predict.

Things like unexpected irritation, tenderness, or even an increase in hair shedding could happen—not because anyone did anything wrong, but simply because autoimmune conditions can be complex and unpredictable. It’s not always something that shows up right away, either. Reactions can develop after days, weeks, or even months.

This doesn’t mean hair extensions are off-limits if you have an autoimmune condition. Far from it! Many clients living with autoimmune issues absolutely love their extensions and enjoy beautiful, long-lasting results. It just means that extra care, communication, and realistic expectations are really important parts of the process.

If you have an autoimmune condition and are considering extensions, it’s a great idea to have an open conversation with your stylist. Share a little bit about your health history and how your hair and scalp have been feeling lately. That way, we can work together to create a plan that’s as safe and customized for you as possible—whether that means adjusting the method, using lighter extensions, or building in extra check-ins.

At the end of the day, it’s all about you feeling confident, beautiful, and supported every step of the way.
